Frequently asked questions

Getting started

What is Fancars?

Fancars is a peer-to-peer car-sharing marketplace. Owners list their cars and set their own prices; renters book directly. We built it to be the fair alternative to legacy car-share apps: a much smaller commission, no hidden fees, and full transparency on the exact trim and features of the car you're renting.

How do I book a car?

Search by location and dates, open a listing, and either request to book or use Instant Book if the host offers it. You'll need an approved driver's license and insurance on file before your first trip — upload those from your account verification page.

Pricing & fees

What fees does Fancars charge?

Renters pay exactly the price the host sets (plus any delivery fee or add-ons they choose, and applicable tax) — we do not add a renter service fee. Hosts pay a flat, low commission on the rental subtotal. We publish this rate openly instead of burying it in a fee stack.

How does the security deposit work?

If a host sets a security deposit, we place an authorization hold on your card shortly before your trip starts — this is a hold, not a charge. It's released automatically after checkout unless there's an open damage claim, in which case we may capture part or all of it to cover repairs.

Can I add extras like a child seat or bike rack to my trip?

Yes — many hosts offer add-ons (child seats, beach chairs, bike racks, unlimited mileage, and more) that you can select at checkout. Prices are shown up front and added to your total before you pay.

Trips

What happens at the start and end of my trip?

Both you and the host document the car's condition with photos and an odometer/fuel reading at pickup and again at return. This protects both sides and is what we reference if a damage claim comes up later.

What is the cancellation policy?

Each listing has one of three policies — Flexible, Moderate, or Strict — shown on the listing page before you book. Refund percentages depend on how close to the trip start you cancel. Hosts who cancel a confirmed booking always refund the renter in full.

Damage & disputes

How do I report damage?

You can file a damage report from your trip page any time during an active trip or at checkout. Hosts can do the same during their checkout review. Include photos and a description — our team reviews every claim.

Can I dispute a charge?

Yes. Extra charges (like mileage overages) include a dispute window shown on the charge itself. Open the charge on your trip page and submit a dispute with your reasoning before the window closes; our team will review it before anything is collected.

Hosting

How do hosts set their prices?

Hosts set their own daily rate — Fancars never dictates pricing. We show a recommended price based on the car's age, segment, and comparable listings nearby, and hosts can opt into automatic pricing that nudges the rate up or down with demand, within a floor and ceiling they control. Hosts can also set weekend rates and holiday pricing.

Trust & safety

Why do I need to verify my license and insurance?

We manually review every renter's driver's license and insurance, and every host's vehicle title and registration, before a listing goes live or a booking is approved. This keeps the marketplace safe for everyone.
